Know When to Say When – Should Texting Replace Voice?

Texting should never replace voice - Seven Waves MarketingJust about everyone I know can text, and their fingers were really flying over the holidays.   I was invited to parties, given travel updates, had requests to come into the next room, saw a few photos, was wished a Happy Birthday, and even asked for addresses to finish up Christmas cards.

Just when is all this texting too much and how many LOL’s can we take during any given day?

Here is my take on it:

  • If you really want me to come to your last minute party, please pick up the phone and let me hear your voice.
  • Thanks for the travel updates – that saved a phone call.
  • I missed the text to come to the next room.
  • Loved seeing the photos.
  • Thanks for my Birthday wishes!
  • Texting addresses?  No way.
  • Did I mention someone asked me how the wedding was?  I can’t describe the dress, the food, and the fun in a line or two.

I know I mentioned everyone texts – except my Mom.  Well, we can text her, but she just doesn’t want to take the time to reciprocate.  Mom gets miffed at my brother who rarely calls, but sends her text updates.

So if I put on my own Mom hat on, then let me say that texting has its place and can be an efficient way to communicate, but texting in business relationships or with a client is probably not a good idea.

My friend Lydia, the author of  “Manners that Sell” said, “what a shame to lose the personal touch with only email and texting”.

So I challenge you to freshen up your relationships and use your phone in 2012 for what it was originally designed for – voice communication.

Dare to Break Out of the Mold – Make Your Business Uncommon

“Real differentiation has become rare.” These were the powerful words of Youngme Moon at the Inbound Marketing Summit in Boston on 9/14.

Christopher Columbus - an Uncommon Thinker

This brought to mind the “what if” brainstorming exercises, like “what if” our company offered this?  “What if we provided this service?  No one else is doing it ….”  These are great exercises to go through if you’re not surrounded by a team who says, “Yes, but.”

What about Christopher Columbus who discovered America?  He was persistent in pushing his belief the world was round and was probably one of the most uncommon thinkers of his era because he thought differently.

I worked for a company many years ago who was so worried about what their competitors were doing, what new gadgets they had, and the latest bells and whistles on the market that they forgot to look at their own business and ask themselves, “what can we offer to our customers that is different?”

Of course there is no formula for how to be different, but what turned my whole world upside down was how the genius can actually be in the negative. What? You mean we market the stuff that is wrong with our company?  Exactly.

One of the best examples Youngme had was Twitter.  Can you imagine all the negative talk surrounding public texting in only 140 characters?  They have literally changed the world.  She said, “In a world of giant sized candy bars, Twitter gave us ththe M&M’s.”

Yes, it’s human nature to cover up our negatives, or try to improve our weak points as  quickly as possible.  And there are always customers who will ask you do something because Brand X is doing it and you should too, because it’s so easy to be a conformist.

So I challenge you to make a list of the negatives about your business and turn those into positive marketing points.

Objections to Facebook – A few Workarounds

Conversations seem to gravitate toward facebook everyday.  One of the biggest objections I hear is I don’t want my profile mixed with where I work or I don’t want to mix business and pleasure.  These are understandable objections, but if you are a small business owner it’s nearly impossible to separate your private life with your business life.  For instance, if you were to open a facebook account just for your business the challenge is you don’t have any friends.  The fan base comes from inviting your own friends to be part of your business because they already know you and they have friends that might want to do business with you and the page is far easier to promote.

Facebook makes it easy to be an administrator of a business page with seamless transition.  Once you sign into your personal account, it’s easy to switch over to your business page to make a few comments and it’s done as the voice of the brand.  Then hop back over to your personal page and anything you post is your personal identity.

The challenges and objections of  the personal page and being an admin for a work page conflict can be easily overcome by opening up another facebook account.   The employer can then bear the burden of promoting their own brand and one way would be to advertise the page on facebook until the buzz begins.

I’ll be presenting at the Savannah Chamber Expo on Sept. 21st at 1:00 on:

How to Set-Up a Facebook Page For Your Business, Tips and Tricks for Enhancing Your Brand Learn how to display graphics, videos, and important basics for making your business “likeable” on  Facebook.

Labor Day, Innovation and Entrepreneurs

Labor Day – it’s a time to pause and reflect on many of the processes you do on a day to day basis during the course of your business day.   It’s a time to turn back and realize where you have come from, how business processes have improved, and how things will never stay the same with constant changes in technology.   Just when you get used to the way things are, there is possibly a new way to get the job done – like online billing, invoice creation, and payment scheduling.   No doubt innovation comes from problem solving entrepreneurs who want to make the lives of others easier and take time to analyze situations without jumping to conclusions.

Partnership and Flexibility

Just recently, a friend of ours had a problem she asked us to help her out with when she noticed graffiti on the wall of her neighbor’s house and thought this would alarm people who might be looking at her house which just went on the real estate market.   As total outsiders from the situation, we were ready to step in and sternly ask the neighbors to remove the graffiti.   We had our lines prepared and rehearsed but I stalled to inspect the graffiti and it turned out to be chalk!  The students living in the rental house next door were just expressing themselves and it quickly washed away.   Not only had our friend jumped to conclusions, she was too close to the situation to see things on a larger scale.  If you are a solo entrepreneur, it pays to partner with others who may see your problems with fresh eyes, who may offer creative solutions.

On this Labor Day, Seven Waves Marketing and The Marketing Dock reflects back to September 1st, as we celebrated one year in business.  Thank you to all the creative bloggers and our local networking community who have opened new doors, exchanged ideas, and made this all possible.

Easy Web and Twitter Friendly Voice Player and Recorder

If you need a way to play recordings on the web, look no further than Evoca.  This is a product we have found so user friendly that it’s worth recommending!  Seven Waves Marketing* has been able to use this player system to broadcast prayer services, to play radio commercials, and even for grassroots political campaigns.

Evoca is always branching out and just announced they are now working with Hospice patients to capture their stories as a family keepsakes.  The Evoca system allows you to record on any hand held phone, which serves as a microphone.

Simply upload to an Evoca account directly from your phone device and later grab the code for a player and park right on your blog or website. It’s also easy to post your recording link directly to Twitter from your account.  For a look at the web players in action, visit The Cradle of Prayer Listening Room.

There are so many ways this unique system can be used, and I’m told that recordings have been made on cell phones right in the midst of disaster, such as the Haiti earthquake, and on the mission field to report back to headquarters in an effortless way.  Teachers even use Evoca to test students remotely who are taking a language class.

Since the world is so mobile and smart phones are the primary source of communication, Evoca makes it easy for business opinion polls or user driven call-in recordings.  With a free 30 day trial offer, it’s hard to think of a reason not to use this unique system. http://www.evoca.com
